Unsung Black Civil Rights Activists and Social Reformers

Mr. Burns focuses on Black civil rights activists who are unknown to most high school and middle school students. Special attention is placed on Marcus Garvey and the Universal Negro Improvement Association and Booker T Washington. The contributions of these two titans in Black history is crucial for students continuing courses in Advance Placement Black Studies and African American Courses in college. The reason being, Marcus Garvey's organization was bigger than the civil rights movement. Twentieth century social reformers including Malcolm X who advocated black economic empowerment were adopted by Marcus Garvey and Booker T Washington. Past events are linked to current events to give students a point of reference.
