Human Computer Interaction Researcher and Designer, Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science at Stanford University

Sean Follmer is a Human Computer Interaction researcher and designer. He is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science (by courtesy) at Stanford University, where he teaches the design of connected devices and directs the Interactive Machines Research Lab. His research team explores the intersection of the physical and digital worlds, creating new technologies for tactile and haptic devices, ubiquitous robotics, mobile interaction, and remote collaboration. Prof. Follmer explores the future of design and collaborative work.

Prof. Follmer received a Ph.D. and a Masters from the MIT Media Lab and a BS in Engineering from Stanford University. Prof. Follmer has received numerous awards for his research and design work, including best paper awards and nominations from premier academic conferences in HCI (ACM UIST and CHI), Fast Company Innovation By Design Awards, the Red Dot Design Award, and the Laval Virtual Award. His projects have been installed and demoed at the Smithsonian’s Cooper Hewitt Design Museum, the MIT museum, and at Milan Design week. Videos of his research have viewed by more than 10 million times and have been featured in the NY Times, BBC. His talk on TED.com was highlighted as a TED talk of the week.
