Cary Woods

Cary Woods is a founding partner, Chief Creative Officer, Co-chairman of Plum TV.

One of the leading figures of the independent film revolution of the 90's, Cary Woods presided over a cinematic era now identified with unparalleled dynamism, youth and change. His role as producer of the first films by Alexander Payne, M Night Shyamalan, Doug Liman, Harmony Korine, Kevin Williamson and others revealed his knack for first identifying the properties and talent who took the independent movement from obscurity and low budget personal films to the $700,000,000 grossed worldwide by Woods' SCREAM franchise. Woods' vision and passion helped to fuel the meteoric rise of the independents, making them the envy of the studios and underscoring his role as one of the engines powering independent film. His unique intelligence and instinct for identifying talent combined with his innovations in the publicity and marketing of new films aided in making Miramax an industry giant. His imprint as a film producer during this exciting and fertile period mark him not only as a notable business success but as an important cultural figure.

Woods' vision was first honed as a William Morris agent, where he introduced audiences to directors Gus Van Sant, Michael Lehmann, and Todd Solondz, comedians Sam Kinison and Sandra Bernhard, and actors Uma Thurman, Matt Dillon, and Tim Robbins. While at WMA, Bronx-born Woods was a major force behind the creation of films that helped revolutionize the industry, including DRUGSTORE COWBOY and HEATHERS, films that affected innovations not only in the stories that we tell ourselves, but how we understand ourselves and the world. At the age of 27, Cary moved to Sony Pictures Entertainment as Vice-President, Office of the Chairman, under Peter Guber and Jon Peters. Two years later, he moved into a production deal with the studio, where he produced the films SO I MARRIED AN AXE MURDERER, RUDY, ONLY YOU, and THREESOME. The powerful, passionate and highly acclaimed KIDS was the first film Cary produced for his own company Independent Pictures, setting the artistic and commercial tone for the company's entire film catalog.
