Doug Mitchell

Consultant/Project Manager - NPR.

I've spent a lot of time re-thinking workplace, recruitment, hiring and staffing as well as intentionally standing in the intersections between work and people. It's a new day and that means new people are required who think a bit differently about how to get something done. Often, the most successful companies (media or not) have a legion of people who can effectively tell a story, whether it be their own or someone else's. To that end and since 1994, I've lead dozens of working professionals in the creation of teams for on-site, hands-on media training projects all around the US, Canada, Mexico and in Chile. If you are a public radio listener, you will regularly hear many of my former project students on NPR newsmagazines and/or local public radio stations. Also, you will see current mentees on local commercial TV news stations or read their bylines in print and/or web-based publications. Essentially, here's what I've learned so far: It's completely true about having a diversified portfolio of work and life. I do a range of things that may seem incongruous on the surface, but are actually connected and intentional. I co-direct startup camps, I consult on re-evaluation projects of academic digital and social media curriculum and it's implementation and I teach as an adjunct instructor leading graduate level journalism students on multimedia field reporting expeditions. And, step into someone else's culture, listen and connect.
