British Film, Television & Theatre Actress Best Known for "Crazy Rich Asians"

Gemma Chan is a British film, television, and theatre actress and former fashion model. She is known for her diverse roles in television series such as "Secret Diary of a Call Girl," "Fresh Meat," "Doctor Who," "Sherlock," and "Humans." She also notably starred as Astrid Leong Teo in Jon M. Chu's 2018 film Crazy Rich Asians, and has portrayed characters in the Marvel Studios films such as Minn-Erva in Captain Marvel and Sersi in Eternals. Furthermore, she has lent her voice to Disney's Raya and the Last Dragon, and appeared in the psychological thriller Don't Worry Darling, and the science fiction film The Creator. Apart from her work in film and television, Chan has also made significant contributions to the stage, with performances in productions like "Yellow Face" and "The Homecoming."

Chan began her career in 2006 as one of the models in season one of "Project Catwalk," the UK version of "Project Runway." She has been the face of campaigns for brands like Nivea Visage, Nokia, and Selfridges and has appeared in numerous magazines, including Elle, Cosmopolitan, and The Sunday Times Style. Apart from modeling, Chan has made her mark in the world of writing, authoring articles for publications such as Save the Children, Harper's Bazaar, and The Guardian.

Over the years, Chan has shown her versatile acting skills in a variety of television series. In 2012, she was a regular in season two of Sky Living's supernatural drama "Bedlam," and in the semi-improvised television series "True Love." In 2013, she starred in the new BBC One crime drama "Shetland," and guest-starred in the BBC's "Death In Paradise." She also made an appearance in the Channel 4 drama "Dates."

Chan's theatre career has also been noteworthy. She made her professional stage debut in the British Premiere of Bertolt Brecht's last play, "Turandot," at the Hampstead Theatre, London, directed by Anthony Clark. She was part of a production by Anders Lustgarten, "The Sugar-Coated Bullets of the Bourgeoisie" at the Finborough Theatre, and performed in the UK premiere of "Yellow Face" by David Henry Hwang, which was revived in 2014 at the Royal National Theatre. In November 2013, Chan performed in the world premiere of "Our Ajax" by Timberlake Wertenbaker at the Southwark Playhouse, London.

A supporter of human rights, she has also made a film for Amnesty International to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Apart from her artistic contributions, Chan has been an advocate and activist for various causes. She has supported organizations such as Help Refugees UK, UNICEF UK, and the #StopAAPIhate movement, and participated in commemorations such as Soccer Aid and World Children's Day. Notably, Chan is a celebrity ambassador for UNICEF UK.
